Emirates airline charged with obtaining USD5b in subsidies

(MENAFN) The Dubai-based Emirates airline has been accused with violating U.S. Open Skies accord and that it has obtained a total of USD5 billion in subsidies from the government, Reuters reported.

In addition, the U.S. carriers claimed that Emirates received hedge losses previously assumed by the parent company The Emirates Group, and that the subsidies have severely aided the airline in routing out competitors from key markets.

"Our investigation shows that these massive subsidies have allowed Emirates, Etihad and Qatar (Airways) to expand far beyond what market forces could ever support," a spokesman from the U.S. said.
