Qatar- Expat's death sentence commuted

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A 10-year rigorous imprisonment awarded by a local court earlier this year to a 43-year-old Indian expatriate for killing one of his compatriots has been reduced to five years by a Court of Appeals, sources said.

Santhi Shyam Krishnan Nair, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was convicted for killing his 26-year old colleague, using an iron rod at their company's accommodation in Wukair in the third week of April 2014.

The victim, Mohamed Rizimul Haq from Sindhri in Madhya Pradesh had come to work for an air-conditioning maintenance firm, where Nair was also employed.

The two had a verbal tussle over some issues at their accommodation before they were dispersed by their colleagues.

The next afternoon Nair, who returned in a fit of anger, allegedly followed Haq when he went to the roof of their accommodation and hit him with an iron rod, causing his instant death.
