Salesman jailed in Dubai for Dh1.8m heist in warehouse


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) He robbed 750 smartphones tablets and other devices worth Dh 1.8 million after breaking into the warehouse.

Dubai -A salesman who has been on trial for breaking into a warehouse and robbing 750 smart phones and other devices worth Dh1.8 million has been sentenced to one year in prison.

The Court of First Instance convicted the 29-year-old Afghan salesman of robbery by use of force and ordered that he be deported after completing his jail term. The salesman who is now held in provisional detention has also been charged with damage of property as he broke the company’s locks and damaged its doors.

The incident allegedly happened on December 28 last year. The company’s owner an Iranian said during the public prosecution investigation that they discovered the robbery around 9am on December 29 last year. “The doors were open even though we made sure to lock them up the night before. The locks were broken. We called the police after realising there was a robbery”. The 56-year-old businessman said that the missing goods included smart phones and tablets worth Dh 1.8 million. A police corporal said they received a report of a robbery at a shop in Satwa. Through leads the police were able to track the defendant and arrested him from the parking lot at the Global Village. He told the cops that he had planned with others to rob the shop.

A police lieutenant said that he questioned the salesman on February 8. During the investigation the defendant claimed that on the day of the incident he went with three others to the shop while under the influence of alcohol. His job was to watch over while his friends wearing gloves broke into the shop and stole the goods.

They put the goods in big bags and transported them in their car to Sharjah. The salesman was promised to get his share after the goods were sold but he did not get any payment he claimed during the investigation.The verdict may be appealed within 15 days.
