Qatar- Fire breaks out in Msheireb building

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Doha witnessed two fires, including one that broke out in one of the most congested parts of the city, yesterday.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

Around afternoon, a fire broke out at an old multi-storey commercial building near the intersection where Msheireb Street joins Al Asmakh Street. The other fire, apparently a smaller one, took place behind a furniture shop off Salwa Road.

The fire in Msheireb, which also reportedly affected another old building in the neighbourhood, was spotted around 3.30pm, sources told Gulf Times. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the area from different parts of Doha, according to residents.

Civil Defence personnel were seen operating in the area over two hours after the fire broke out. They managed to prevent the fire from spreading further to other buildings in the locality.

Though the cause of the fire was not immediately known, some shopkeepers attributed it to a short circuit in the commercial building, which also reportedly served as a residential accommodation until recently.

It is understood that most tenants in the building vacated the place a couple of months ago after they were served eviction notices. The area has been earmarked for demolition, set to take place shortly.

A few retail outlets were believed to be still functioning from the building and were in the process of moving out from the locality, it is learnt.

Though sources said some residential tenants were still left in the building, it could not be confirmed. It is also not known if any of them were in the building when the fire started. Enquiries found that there were residents in one of the neighbouring buildings.

The extent of damage caused by the fire off Salwa Road was not yet known.

Meanwhile, there were reports of a fire breaking out at a construction site near Barwa City in Mesaimeer on Sunday.
