Jordan- Aqaba customs seize fireworks, other contraband

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Officers of the Aqaba Customs Centre Sunday foiled an attempt to smuggle in a large amount of fireworks in a stepped up crackdown on dangerous goods, and also seized other contraband, according to the Jordan Customs Department.

In a statement, the department said about 975 cartons of fire crackers were found concealed in a container that was declared as holding primary material, and referred the case to the prosecutor. The Customs Department has in recent months launched a crackdown on fireworks, leading to increased attempts at smuggling, as their use particularly rises during the holy month of Ramadan.

The department said its personnel seized "very large amounts" of fireworks last year and published such information on the contraband on social media, urging the public for help to stop their use.

The statement also said about 209 cartons of cigarettes were confiscated after these were found in a container and initially declared to be carrying mattresses.
