Jordan- House passes Code of Conduct

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Lower House Sunday passed the Code of Conduct for members aimed to regulate parliamentary work and enhance the MPs' accountability, in the last meeting of parliament's current extraordinary session.

The document sets the rules for MPs' conduct as part of the country's drive to promote the values of democracy and citizenship, public's confidence in the House, national unity principles, civil and political rights stipulated in the constitution, and avoid civil strife and all actions that might undermine social security and stability.

It commits an MP to observe the text of the constitution, the valid state laws and the House's rules of procedures and shun all that might harm the House's reputation and prestige as one of the key institutions of the state. It states that an MP has to protect the secrecy of information concerning citizens' affairs, privacy and personal matters that he/she comes to know through their work, defend people's rights and not to discriminate between them.

The document also obligates a lawmaker to respect the ideology and political orientation of others, put the legislature on notice well ahead of any private visit he/she might make to any country and maintain the House's reputation during such private or official trips.

The code also asks an MP to place the public interest before the personal interest in every affair, and not to exploit the membership of the House for any personal benefit or cover up any act of corruption or injustice to harm the country and its citizens.

On MPs' conduct under the dome, it imposes penalties for unjustified absenteeism, bars a lawmaker from carrying arms in the meeting halls and the legislature's corridors.

Before it goes into recess starting Tuesday, the House referred to its legal committee the 2015 integrity and anti-corruption draft law.
