Qatar- Aspire's Ramadan Sports Festival sees strong competition


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The first week of Aspire Ramadan Sports Festival at Aspire Zone Foundation saw strong competition in a number of sports including football, volleyball, basketball and table tennis amongst others.

Aspire Logistics Events manager Abdulla al-Khater handed out trophie as well as second and third place medals to the winning teams in junior futsal events, table tennis for players with disabilities, and ladies volleyball and basketball teams.

In the Embassies Cup tournament € with competing teams made up by embassy staff € India beat UAE 3-2 in a close match. Elsewhere, Morocco comfortably won 9-3 over Mexico. The two results mean that India and Morocco are in the final stages of the tournament.

The Qatari side qualified for the next stage after the Sudanese team withdrew.

In the women's basketball tournament, Team 6 claimed the crown with a deserved victory in the final against Al-Zubara while Semsma secured third place after beating Al-Zakhera.

In the final match of the juniors futsal tournament, team 'Brazil' triumphed 2-0 over team 'Galaxy' to become champions. Team 'Barcelona' finished third after beating 'Al Helal'.

The game between Alkafod and Doha Stars turned into one of the best and most exciting matches of the men's football tournament. The lead changed many times before the match ended in a 5-4 victory for Alkafod. In another match, 'PSG' beat 'Doha' 5-2.

In the women's volleyball event, Hyper Spikers won the tournament defeating team Actor in a very exciting final match. Team QPM was placed third.

At the end of the competition, winners received medals and trophies. The best player award went to Kathrine Sotego (Actor) while Cynthia Arceo won the best receiver award and Maryam Almanai the best spiker award.

The festival also included a tennis table competition for people with disabilities organised in partnership with Qatar Paralympic Committee. The event was marked by a number of strong performances, reflecting the development and progress of the sport in Qatar. The competition included three categories for differently-abled players affected by physical and hearing disabilities, or mental conditions.

In the physical disability category, Khalid al-Afifi triumphed in first place, while Faisal Jaber and Abdullah Taleb secured victories in categories for differently-abled players with mental conditions and hearing disabilities respectively.

Hussein al-Haddad of the Qatar Paralympic Committee and director of the table tennis competition for people with disabilities said: "This is a unique tournament for disabled players across its three categories. It is really well organised with very easy access to courts and excellent facilities. I would like to extend my thanks to Aspire Zone for all its efforts in making this festival happen and we look forward to participation in future years."

For his part, al-Afifi extended his thanks to Aspire Zone for their continuous support for players with disabilities, commenting: "It is one of my favourite tournaments. This is the third year in which I have participated in this tournament and every year it gets better, with excellent organisation and great competitors. I want to thank the management and staff of Aspire Zone for their continuous support."

A futsal tournament for Aspire Zone staff was launched on Saturday with team 3 Pillars thrashing team Stars 20-0. In the second match, team "Etolie Sportive" (Aspire Academy) and team FC Mazz (Logistics) played each other in a thrilling match which ended in a 3-0 win for FC Mazz.
