Qatar- Minister cautions youth against blind faith in social media

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) HE the Minister of Information and Communications Technology Dr Hessa al-Jaber has called on the youth to be critical and not blindly believe the information they get from social media networks.

Speaking at the green tent organised by the Friends of Environment Centre (FEC) on Saturday, Dr al-Jaber said that all people, especially the youth, should verify what they read (in the social media) by analysing the information, the data and the news and go back to their original sources. She called on the youth to be critical and not to repose blind trust in everything.

Reviewing the positive and negative aspects of the various social media networks, the Minister underlined the importance of enlightenment in these fields.

Dr al-Jaber said it would be difficult to close the social media networks down especially as their daily use has become a major part of the everyone's life and also because of their positive effect as one of the skills tools.

She noted that about 70% of the youth in the world, who are below 26, get the news from social media networks while over 75% of Arab youths, below than 24, rely on them completely.

The Minister referred to the co-operation existing between the ministry
and Higher Education Council to educate students on the use of the social media networks, noting that an initiative to this effect will be applied next year for primary schools students.

She said awareness is part of the values and skills taught by teachers at
schools, adding that certain companies in Qatar were supporting this service and provide it in an appropriate manner.

Dr al-Jaber said e-commerce is one of the means of social media and commercial promotion. She said that over 8,000 small scale companies sell different products in the region through the Instagram.
