Fire at Taiwan water park injures 516, 194 seriously

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Police are investigating the cause of an explosion at water park in Taiwan that left more than 516 people injured, 194 seriously.

Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported Sunday that the incident occurred late Saturday at a "Color Play Asia" party when a stage at the New Taipei City venue reportedly caught fire.

Flammable powder used during the performance is reported to have exploded sending a ball of flame through the air.

Television images showed people swathed in bandages being stretchered to ambulances.

Although the blaze was quickly brought under control, it still left many people with serious injuries.

Due to the large number of injured, ambulances were brought in from neighboring cities and visitors were forced to use large inflatable swimming rings as stretchers until rescuers arrived.

Mayor Eric Chu has referred to the incident as the "worst... of mass injury in New Taipei.""

The event organiser apologized Sunday and promised to take full responsibility.

"We need to apologize to the families. I am very sorry that something like this happened," said Lu Chung-chi.

"We shoulder ultimate responsibility," Lu added, before he was taken to Shilin District Prosecutors' Office for questioning.

CNA reported that Lu and staff responsible for special effects at the party were interviewed by police overnight.

Formosa Fun Coast Water Park has been closed until further notice.
