Oman- Women's representation in municipal councils low


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Figures released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) show there are only 2.1 women for every 100 men in the country's 11 municipal councils.

In the first Municipal Council elections held in 2012 only four women candidates were elected compared to 188 men stated a press release. The four were elected from among the 46 women candidates in the fray.

Most of these candidates were in the age group of 35 to 39 years.  In comparison 1429 men contested the Municipal Council polls. Most of the male members are in the age group of 45 to 49 years. Of the total candidates who contested 96.9 per cent were men and 3.1 per cent women.
