Qatar, Sudan emerge victorious in first round of Embassies Tournament


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The first round of Aspire Zone Embassies Tournament being held as part of Ramadan Sports Festival in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry, drew to a close with fierce competition.

On the second, Mexican Ambassador Francisco Niembro participated and his team beat the French embassy 9-2, entering the second round. Niembro said: "I arrived in Qatar a month ago and I think the tournament is a great idea. I'm impressed with facilities at Aspire Zone and I'm glad I'm able to celebrate Ramadan with such great activities. It's important for people at embassies to interact with colleagues like this. I'd like to thank Aspire Zone Foundation for organising the tournament and I'm looking forward to the final match."

The second match also saw strong competition between Morocco and Syria, with the former winning 5-3 and going to the second round.

Syrian Coalition Ambassador Nizar Al Hiraki joined his team. He said: "We're happy to be participating in the tournament. This has been well organised and we're glad to meet fellows from other embassies. The tournament represents Qatar's efforts to bring people together and spread peace and joy."

On the third day, Sudan played Ethiopia in the first match, hitting the back of the net 13 times while the Ethiopian team could put two goals past the goalkeeper. The Qatari team beat the Tunisian team 7-4, entering the second round alongside Sudan, Morocco, Mexico, the UAE and India.

Twelve teams are participating in the first tournament, distributed into two groups of six teams. Losers from each match are eliminated and winners qualify for the second round. The final stage will see three teams play against each other on a points system, and the final will be held on June 30 at Aspire indoor pitch.

Banks tournament: In the Banks Tournament, Masraf Al Rayan beat Qatar International Bank 4-0 and Qatar National Bank (QNB) defeated Doha Bank 2-1. Khalid Al Hail, Manager, Awael Zone, QNB, said: "We are also participating in other competitions, but we consider this one of the most important. This is the first time we've played on a cooled, indoor pitch."

Men's football tournament: Al Waab secured a 3-0 win against Al Malky and Maizar Stars beat Al Wadi 5-0.

Junior competitions: In the junior futsal tournament, Brazil beat Blackstars 4-1 and Galaxy beat Al Ameed with the same result. All competitions begin at 9.30pm and last until midnight. The festival is being held in partnership with Vodafone Qatar, Sport Corner, Women's Sports Committee and Paralympic Committee.
