Qatar Mission to UN holds event on future of Syria


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva organsied an event 'Syria after tyranny: The achievement of a democratic and multi-Parties future'.

It was held in collaboration with the permanent missions of France, Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the US, and 'No Peace Without Justice' organisation on the sidelines of the 29th session of Human Rights Council which runs until July 3.

Speakers included Hisham Marwa, Deputy Chairman, Syrian National Coalition, Hussein Al Sabbag, Secretary-General, European-Syrian Democratic Forum, Imad Al Din Rashid, Head, Political Office, National Syrian Movement, Basma Kodmani from Arab Initiative for Reform, Amir Kazkaz from the centre documenting violations in Syria, and Alison Smith, Legal Adviser to 'No Peace Without Justice'.

It highlighted means of obtaining victims' rights, accountability mechanisms, civic participation as a prerequisites to ensure the establishment of a fair democracy in Syria to break the tyranny of extremism and dictatorship and the need to remind the international community that to reach a lasting political solution to the war, obstacles to accountability must be overcome and those responsible for various crimes held accountable.

Qatari Acting Charge d'Affaires Mohannad Al Hammadi stressed confidence in the ability of the Syrian people to achieve victory and get rid of the authoritarian Assad regime which has persistently committed crimes and violation of all rights of the Syrian people.

He said there would be no fear about the future of Syria after the demise of tyranny and removal of the Assad regime.

Al Hammadi expressed Qatar's belief in the ability of the Syrian people to work on the leadership of the transitional political process, eliminate extremist and terrorist groups backed by the regime which have wreaked havoc and terror and provide appropriate conditions for solutions.
