(MENAFN- The Peninsula) University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ), the country's sole academic institution for the nursing profession, has been awarded approval from Council for Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP), to provide Continuing Professional Development programme.
The programme contributes to the quality of care for everyone by providing training for healthcare professionals.
This allows nurses and other professionals to constantly build skills in line with Qatar's National Health Strategy 2011-2016 and Qatar National Vision 2030.
"We are honoured by this opportunity to provide professional development and acknowledge QCHP's initiatives for the programme as important to Qatar's goals in healthcare," said Dr Kim Critchley, Dean and CEO, UCQ.
"As the only nursing university in Qatar, our bachelor and Master's nursing programmes have delivered gold-standard Canadian nursing education for almost a decade.
"Now as a provider of continuing professional development of nurses and healthcare practitioners in Qatar, we feel we have more opportunity to support Qatar's healthcare vision."
UCQ has trained many current healthcare professionals through its Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Nursing programmes.
Its latest initiative to provide Continuing Professional Development programme reflects the widely acknowledged imperative of lifelong learning for professionals in the healthcare industry.
Through the programme commencing this fall, UCQ will contribute to enhancing healthcare in Qatar and extend its educational portfolio.
Christine MacDonald, Senior Nursing Instructor and Continuing Professional Development Accreditation Project Coordinator, UCQ, said: "We are excited that the council has granted us provider approval. The mandatory system of the programme licensure of healthcare professionals for Qatar is an ambitious and unique national initiative, and we are proud to be part of it.
"With provider status, we can proceed to plan courses relevant to and based on the needs of healthcare professionals, but as a nursing university, there will be a natural focus on nurses."
In realising its vision for the programme in Qatar and to design and implement a customised Continuing Professional Development programme accreditation system, the council is consulting Canada's Royal College of Physicians. Once enrolled in the programme, local healthcare professionals will undertake course work at UCQ in support of Qatar's seven health strategy goals, including a world-class healthcare system and a skilled national workforce.
