South Korea will take measures to counter MERS

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) South Korea will take measures to counter the economic impact effect of the recent outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, the government said Thursday, dpa reported.

The economic growth forecast for this year was lowered from 3,8 to 3,1 per cent, the Finance Ministry said, as the disease claimed its 28th and 29th victims since the start of the outbreak a month ago.

'The economy has been affected by MERS,' Finance Minister Choi Kyung Hwan said in a televised broadcast.

Domestic consumption and the service sector had been particularly hard hit, he said.

Earlier this month, South Korea's central bank lowered a key interest rate to 1.5 per cent, citing concerns about the impact of the MERS outbreak.
