Saudis flaunt Ramadan decor on social media
(MENAFN- Arab News) ABHA: Saudi women are keen on creating a Ramadan atmosphere at home. Some are decorating their houses with decorations that match the environment of the holy month such as the lamp and the Ramadan tent-shaped table to make this month more special for family members.
Many women are using social media to show off their talents. WhatsApp Snapchat and Instagram became platforms for people to show off their new decorations and fancy tables.
Many women's and family websites are posting articles teaching people about new ways to decorate and add a special touch to their houses with easy steps.
Businesswoman Noura Al-Rafie said that a change is needed during Ramadan to bring joy to the house. She said that the holy month encouraged her go to the decoration store to buy a variety of plates that celebrate the holy month.
Huda Asiri Abdul Rahman only placed a few simple decorations in the entrance of the house as a change and nice way to celebrate the holy month.
She told Arab News that the decorations make her children happy and instills good memories in their minds about Ramadan. She explained that this habit doesn't have to be annual as it depends on the financial and social situation 'I was hesitant at first until I saw the children's happiness and eagerness over the decorations.'
However Abdul Rahman thinks these private familial decorations shouldn't be shown to the public. 'Social media became a way to flaunt food tables and decorations without attention to other people's feelings' she added.
Abu Abdullah says that these practices are new to Saudi society. 'Ramadan should be a month of worship and these habits are a source of worry as they become a habit leading the family to suffer unneeded economic expenditures' he said adding that it's preferred to direct spending to the poor and needy and not on decorations.
Amal Al-Nasser said that people know the traditional songs for Ramadan by heart and decorate their neighborhoods exchanging greetings for the holy month describing people's feelings as they are receiving a dear guest. 'This shows how much people love Ramadan and it expresses people's close relations with one another especially in one month' she told Arab News.
Decoration expert Ala Al-Hariri said that many women want to show off their talents on social media. 'I don't think that they should take this habit to the extreme because the increased attention to the looks cancels the spirituality of the month.'
