(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Finland will reduce the quota of its 2016 refugee intake, local media reported Tuesday.
According to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper, the quota would be reduced from 1,050 refugees to 750 in 2016.
The news comes two months after the central right coalition government came to power in Finland and after the new economic package was announced.
According to the package, the Finnish government aims to save ‚¬10 billion per year to overcome economic stagnation, high unemployment and foreign debt.
The newspaper said that at a time when Sweden had accepted 100,000 refugees per year, only 1,000 out of 3,000 were accepted in Finland.
The president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Anne Brasseur, called on European countries and international community to take more responsibility in facing international refugee crisis. Brasseur said Monday that it was a global issue, which had to be solved globally.
She recalled that Turkey was hosting about two million refugees from Iraq and Syria.
"More than 50 million people were displaced by war and violence in 2014," she said, adding: "In 2015, the numbers will climb to above 60 million, [which is the size of] the population of a large European country."
Brasseur said that Europe was at the forefront of this refugee crisis and mixed migratory flow. "The Mediterranean Sea has become a 'mass grave' for thousands of people who try to cross to Europe," she added.
