(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Environmentalist Yahya al Salmani has become the second Omani to have set foot on both North and South Poles.

Salmani raised the Omani flag after reaching the North Pole on June 9 as part of the International North Pole Expedition (Arctic).

'This trip provided me the chance to add my name to the short list of adventurers who have journeyed to the top of the world it is now reasonable to say 'If you can dream it you can do it'' Salmani was quoted in a press release as saying.

The nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy which ranks among the largest icebreakers in the world sailed from Murmansk (North Russia) across the Barents Sea to reach the point of 90° at the centre of the North Pole the release stated.

'This was the time when I raised the Omani flag at this unique geographical location. I was really proud that Oman was the only Arab country which participated in this voyage. 'It was also a great chance to be the first Omani who has done the Arctic Polar Plunge. We measured the temperature of the ocean at -1.5°.

This also makes me a member of the Arctic Polar Plunge Club.' Salmani said that on way back from the North Pole members of the expedition visited towering volcanic mountains icebergs and glaciers of Franz Josef Land.

'We had the opportunity to explore the Arctic area by enjoying the expansive polar landscape both from the ship and from an expertly-piloted helicopter. I am really glad that I had a chance to practice my photography skills in such an area. I was able to capture the diversity of Arctic wildlife such as polar bears Atlantic walruses and marine birds such as ivory gull and black legged kittiwaje.'
