Qatar- Major overhaul of Old Airport area planned in two phases

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced a major overhaul of the Old Airport area, a key residential and commercial district in the city. Work on the project starts on Saturday.

Several interior roads in the area will be converted to main roads with all basic amenities such as pedestrian paths, parking slots and sidewalks.

Some roads will be partially closed for work and could witness traffic congestions in the days to come.

The project also includes development of infrastructure in the area, including drainage and surface and groundwater networks and street lighting.

A signal-controlled intersection will be built between Al Hurriya and Al Salah streets, along with repaving the road, and installing interlock on sidewalks.

The project will be carried out in two phases.

Work during phase one starts on Saturday and will continue for five months, Ashghal said in a statement yesterday.

Phase one will comprise upgrading of Al Karama, Al Tabarani, Al Hussain Bin Ali, Al Salah and part of Al Hurriya Street. The five streets will be restricted to one-way traffic while the opposite direction will remain open.

Temporary access to residences will be provided throughout the construction period and vehicles can also use internal roads in the area as alternative routes. Phase two will include upgrading of Al Ameen Street, Al Rawdha Street and Al Tuhama Street.

Work schedule for this phase has yet to be announced and it is expected that upgrade of all eight streets in both phases will be completed in the second quarter of 2016.
