RAF donation drive to secure release of 20 Qataris in jail

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) has launched a campaign to collect donations to rescue 20 Qatari citizens jailed for defaulting on loan payments.

Their debt ranges from QR120,000 to QR1.5m, Al Sharq reports.

RAF will publish one case every day with details of debt to be paid by the defaulter to attract donors.

The charity wants these men and women out of the prison before Eid Al Adha so they can rejoin their families, said Dr Yahya bin Hamad, Deputy Director, Local Projects, RAF.

Dr Hamad said the campaign gives people opportunity to be part of the charity drive during Ramadan.

Helping a person in debt is helping the entire family, he said.

RAF will also approach lenders with a request to waive part of loans.

Dr Hamad said the beneficiaries were identified after a study by RAF's social researchers and priority will be given to those sentenced to imprisonment or in jail.

The ceiling is QR2m per defaulter as there are cases where the debt is much lower.
