Market Report "India Petrochemicals Report Q3 2015" published

(MENAFNEditorial)

The outlook for the Indian petrochemicals industry has improved markedly in recent months due to a combination of President Modi's economic liberalisation market growth and the positive effect of falling naphtha prices on competitiveness according to BMI's latest India Petrochemicals Report. The scenario should boost opportunities for investment in new capacity as well as adding value through the production chain.

Q315 should see a surge in polymers capacities particularly in polyethylene (PE) which could put the market in surplus by the end of the year. India's polyethylene (PE) market is moving into self-sufficiency with a number of plants due to open in Q315; it is poised for a slight surplus in 2015 with new plants coming on-stream in coming months. Project completions include ONGC Petro-additions Ltd's (OPaL) two 360000 tonnes per annum (tpa) high density PE (HDPE)/linear low density PE (LLDPE) swing plants and a standalone HDPE plant with a capacity of 340000tpa at the Dahej Special Economic Zone in Gujarat. In addition there is Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited's 220000tpa HDPE/LLDPE swing facility and GAIL's 400000tpa PE plant at its Pata facility in Uttar Pradesh. The reopening of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd's (HPL) West Bengal operations in Q115 will also boost PE and polypropylene (PP) output.

The PET chain is also set to get a boost with ONGC due to bring its ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals complex up to full production including 900000tpa of paraxylene (PX) as well as an associated 440000tpa PP plant. Meanwhile Indian Oil Company is due to complete a PET project with capacities of 600000tpa PX and 370000tpa purified terephthalic acid (PTA).

 *  In 2015/16 with GDP growth set to reach 7.6% up from 7.4% the petrochemicals market is set for strong growth. The government's pro-growth agenda and accommodative monetary policy by the central bank will broadly support strong petrochemicals demand over the coming quarters.
