Tusk calls for end to "political gambling" on Greece

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, Monday said he called for the emergency meeting of Eurozone leaders on the Greek debt crisis because time is running out.

"We have only one week before the current Greek programme expires. And this means that the 'let's wait and see" strategy must end," he told journalists ahead of the meeting.

"This evening I want all cards on the table. It doesn't mean that I want to negotiate the technical details, but it means that I want to end the political gambling. I can say that since I called this informal meeting some promising things have happened, including today's talks and meetings," he said.

"And the latest Greek proposals are the first real proposals in many weeks, although they obviously still need the assessment of the institutions and further work. But the most important thing is that the leaders take full responsibility for the political process to avoid the worst-case scenario which means uncontrollable, chaotic Graccident," he added.

On his part, French President Francois Hollande said "the Greek government has made new, more precise, stronger proposals- made an effort.

"The Greeks want to exit this crisis. Although we will not reach formal decisions tonight, I hope that our meeting will pave the way for an agreement as soon as possible," he added.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, "after today's Eurogroup meeting there is no basis for a decision, thus we will only be able to have a counseling meeting."
