Ahmedabad gets world's first organ transplant varsity

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The world's first 'organ transplant university' is now open in Ahmedabad on the premises of the famed Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC).

The Rs500-million Gujarat University of Transplantation Science inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel on Saturday will offer courses in renal physiology, dialysis technology, organ failure prevention and conduct Ph.D programmes in transplantation immunology, transplant pathology, etc.

The university, which will draw research faculty and students from across Indian, American and Canadian universities, was formed after the state government last year gave the status of a university to the IKDRC which witnesses some 400 kidney transplants and 50,000 dialyses every year.

IKDRC's septuagenarian director Dr H L Trivedi, who will be the university's first chancellor, told Khaleej Times that the institute was thronged every year by some 150,000 kidney disorder patients, including many from foreign countries and even non-resident Gujaratis settled in the US and the UK.
