(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A non-emergency number 901 introduced by the Sharjah Police has become an instant hit among the residents. Since its launch on June 9, the police have received 3,500 calls from the public to report crimes, and inquire about traffic and police services.
However, there are many who still use the emergency number 999 for non-emergency matters. An officer at the operation room told Khaleej Times people need to get used to 901.
The official said they expected the number of calls to rise and urged the public to keep using 901 for non-emergency purposes. Among the calls recorded by the police, 365 were about crimes and 22 were against beggars. The rest of the calls were enquiries about various services provided by the police to the public.
Lieutenant Colonel Jasim bin Haddah, director of police operation said that 901 answer calls round the clocks and would provide information about 75 services currently being provided by police.
The number also received calls about all illegal activities like begging, mobile vendors, traffic and parking issues.
He urged the public to call 901 only for non-emergency purpose, and call 999 only for serious emergency situation.
"By calling 999 for non-emergency, you are putting another person who is in real emergency situation in risk," Bin Haddah said.
