UAE- Will registration at DIFC is a welcome step: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A UAE paper has said that one of the practical difficulties for expatriates living in the UAE is to have their existing will registered so that their last wishes and testament can be carried out expeditiously, following the intent of the document.

"More often than not, those wills are written under legal systems that are not necessarily in synch with the principles applied in regular courts where Sharia applies," said Gulf News in an editorial on Tuesday.

And when a sudden death does occur, often moving assets and dividing them needs to be done sooner rather than later, and a timely action plan is needed, one that would benefit from avoiding a costly wrangle in local courts.

Now, expats with assets such as homes and investments in Dubai have the option of registering their will with Dubai International Financial Centre and have their wishes executed and expedited under the principles of Common Law.

"This is a welcome development and one that expats with wills written under the doctrine of common Law should take advantage of, and the sooner the better. Dealing with the issue now can prevent a myriad of issues for executors and beneficiaries," concluded the Dubai-based daily.
