Proposal for regional parliament to elect Iraqi KRG president

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) One of the parties in northern Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government has proposed that the area's president be elected by the regional parliament as opposed to direct voting.

Jalal Talabani of the PUK party announced via the party's official website Monday that the PUK had submitted its proposal to the regional parliament.

If approved by the regional parliament, the next president of the northern Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government will not be elected by the area's people, but by MPs in the regional parliament.

The statement also said that candidates must be over 40-years-old to run for president.

Current President Masoud Barzani's Kurdistan Democratic Party does not support the move.

Barzani was elected by MPs in 2005 and directly by the people in 2009.

His mandate expired in 2013, but the regional parliament extended the mandate until Aug. 20, 2015.
