Qatar- Rumailah Hospital opens new long term care unit

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Rumailah Hospital has opened a new long-term care unit as part of Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) plan to strengthen its specialist continuing care services.

The new 20-bed Long-Term Care Unit (LTCU), the fourth of its kind, caters to long term ventilated patients, and adds extra bed capacity at Rumailah Hospital. It will co-locate long term ventilated patients by creating a single specialised location for their care, and also allow specialist multidisciplinary teams to provide enhanced care delivery for these types of patients by having all the medical expertise located in one setting.

HMC managing director Dr Hanan al-Kuwari opened the unit at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and said the addition of the LTCU 4 underscores the continuing development of long-term care services taking place at Qatar's largest public healthcare provider.

"The new long-term care unit at Rumailah Hospital provides an advanced care system for long-term patients on ventilators. We have a dedicated team of specialised professionals who provide excellent medical care and engage with families to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients," Dr al-Kuwari said.

"HMC is in the midst of a major expansion and modernisation of the country's healthcare infrastructure, which is tied to Qatar's National Health Strategy and the Qatar 2030 Vision, and we are moving forward on a number of large projects that will expand the capacity of healthcare services available to the population of Qatar," Dr al-Kuwari added.

Treatment at the LTCU 4 focuses on family involvement in the day-to-day care of patients, according to head of the unit, Clinical Lead, Geriatrics Consultant Dr Hanadi KM Alhamad.

"We have many patients who have been with us for a long time, and we know the families well. They spend a lot of time with us and it is important to include them in the care of their loved ones. It is a partnership that we develop through trust and expertise to provide the most therapeutic environment on this difficult journey," said Dr AlHamad.

Two existing long-term care units have also been upgraded in the hospital within the past 12 months, including a second unit for ventilated patients and one for patients with tracheotomies.

HMC's chief of continuing care group Mahmoud al-Raisi said the new unit is part of a larger strategy to develop the healthcare provider's continuing care programme for an expanding population.

This latest development in HMC's continuing care programme follows the opening earlier this year of the Enaya Specialised Care Centre in Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City € a 156-bed facility that services long-term patients who require round-the-clock care.
