Oman- Ministries, govt bodies intensify checks to ensure food quality


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Inspections to ensure quality of food products during Ramadan have been stepped up. Ministries and government agencies are coordinating on the campaign which includes surprise checks on restaurants stores and all establishments that deal in food.

The Muscat Municipality has cautioned the public against buying food from unlicensed vendors. A spokesperson from the municipality said that food items exposed to heat dust and vehicular pollution are a threat to public health.

Consumers have been advised to check the country of origin and date of expiry on imported food products. Any discrepancy should immediately be reported on the municipality hotline he said. Muscat Municipality's checks are covering everything from transportation packaging by retailers to sale of edible items at shops cafés and restaurants.

Inspectors are closely monitoring dairy products and juices to avoid a health crisis arising from contamination the spokesperson said adding that complaints are being promptly followed up.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR) said that it has confiscated and destroyed 1406kg of meat during Ramadan inspections. Since the beginning of June officials from the ministry's food monitoring department have visited 607 establishments and issued 89 warnings a ministry spokeswoman said.

An official from the Public Authority for Consumer Protection said that inspections of markets and commercial centres have been stepped up to check price manipulation and sale of expired or contaminated items. The authority has asked members of the public to report any such cases.
