Oman's Council of Ministers discusses water supply, weather conditions


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) As part of the keenness of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to maintain the pace of development and the welfare of Omani citizens the Council of Ministers studied various issues of relevance during its meetings this month.

Key issues discussed include improving the quality of government services avenues for economic growth studying challenges posed to the electricity and water sectors addressing the aftermath of the recent climatic condition and studying reports of various public authorities.

The council discussed means of developing administrative systems in the country in line with current demand.

It reviewed studies submitted by the Council of Oman and the State's Financial and Administrative Audit Institution.

The council gave directives for devising a system for measuring the quality of government services.

Towards this goal service ministries will form internal committees to streamline services and devise mechanisms to tackle challenges they face while ministries are required to speed up the process of e-Government transformation.

The council underlined the importance of assessing the performance of customer service departments in public units for achieving their objectives.

Within the context of a policy to diversify sources of income and to make optimum use of the sultanate's geographical location and infrastructure the Council of Ministers approved steps undertaken by the parties concerned to benefit from opportunities in the logistics sector.

For this purpose the Supreme Council of Planning has been tasked with revising mechanisms and programmes of the National Strategy for the Logistics Sector that was submitted to the Council of Ministers within the framework of the Oman Economic Vision.

The council instructed all the concerned departments in this sector to coordinate to achieve the desired goals.

To diversify the national income and achieve sustainable growth rate a presentation was made to the Council of Ministers by Duqm Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZAD).

The presentation dealt with efforts that were exerted the progress made as well as the challenges posed to SEZAD. Accordingly the Council of Ministers gave directives to concerned authorities to come up with solutions to overcome these challenges.

The council also instructed the parties concerned to finalise the remaining packages of main projects in Duqm.

The council underlined its decisions on the importance of visits being made to the project sites by cabinet members and other government staff to get first-hand reports and tackle challenges as they come.

The Council of Ministers also reviewed reports of the National Records and Archives Authority the Public Authority for Radio and Television Riyada (formerly the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development) and the programmes and future plans of the Electricity Regulatory Authority.

On the recent developments in the electricity and water sectors the Council of Ministers followed up the issue with great concern.

A presentation was made to the council by the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW).

PAEW explained the reasons for delay of some water-related projects and the steps taken to meet the increasing demand.

The council stressed that all departments should join hands to provide it comprehensive reports on the challenges facing the sector. The council thanked all the departments that cooperated to limit the impact of water shortage.

Due to the importance of raw materials in the construction sector the council instructed the Public Authority for Mining to draft regulatory and monitoring mechanisms to address the issue of crushers. The council also stressed that the departments concerned should take necessary action to meet the local market's demand for cement.

About the recent climatic condition which prevailed in the sultanate the council reviewed efforts exerted to bring back things to normal. A number of ministers are on field visits to inspect the damage and remove obstacles in restoration of services. The council thanked the National Commission for Civil Defence the ROP the Sultan's Armed Forces security and civil departments the Public Authority for Radio and Television media public societies private sector establishments and citizens for their cooperation collaboration and assistance provided in areas affected by the storm.
