Heat wave claims 55 lives S. Pakistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A severe heat wave that struck Pakistan's southern Karachi city has claimed 55 lives in two days in the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, said officials on Sunday.

The head of the emergency department at JPMC, Dr. Seemi Jamali confirmed: "So far, we have received 26 dead bodies at Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Center (JPMC) since Saturday night." "They may have been suffering from different diseases but most probably, they died of heat stroke or heat exhaustion," he said.

The Country's largest NGO Edhi Foundation's spokesperson, Anwar Kazmi said that around thirty dead bodies have been shifted to the cold storage from different locations of the metropolitan. Most of the deceased were old people killed due to extreme weather conditions.

The mercury touched 45 degrees Celsius across Sindh province including provincial capital Karachi, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur. According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, wind pattern indicated that the relatively cool sea breeze was not blowing and the city was getting hot continental air increasing the amount of moisture in air to 45 percent.
