Arab League welcomes French initiative for Mideast peace

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Arab League on Sunday welcomed the initiative raised by the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius for relaunching Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

The League backs up the French initiative and the efforts to table a draft resolution to the UN Security Council based on the Arab vision for peace, the League's Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and occupied Arab territories affairs Mohammad Sobeeh said in a press release.

"The French initiative calls for holding substantive talks on ways to end the Israeli occupation within a specified time schedule and based on the UN points of reference," he revealed.

Ambassador Sobeeh added that the League's Secretary-General Nabil Al-Araby is in contact with active players, including the United States, France, Denmark, New Zealand and Russia, with a view to reviving the stalled peace process.

Al-Araby will head for Moscow soon to discuss the French initiative with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, he added. (end)
