Mogherini to meet Zarif in Luxembourg to discus Iranian nuclear issue

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) EU High Representative Federica Mogehrini will chair a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif together with the foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK at the sidelines of a EU foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg later Monday.

Mogehrini told reporters as she arrived for the meeting that they will discuss the main issues which are still open as they enter the last stage of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue and close the deal within the deadline of June 30.

Morover, Mogherini said she will propose to the EU foreign ministers to take a decision to launch the naval mission "EUNAVFOR MED" to stop migrant smugglers in the Mediterranean.

The EU foreign ministers will also have the first ever discussion on energy as this is becoming more and more a foreign policy issue, she noted. They will also have a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on EU-UN cooperation, and later hold discussion on ties with Asia as well as also on the Middle East Peace Process On his part, Philip Hammond, UK Foreign Secretary, told reports that "there will need to be some more flexibility shown by our Iranian partners if we are going to reach a deal."

"This is a negotiation, we always expected it would go right to the line and maybe beyond the line. I think the serious negotiation is now getting on the way, next week or so. I hope we will start to see some real progress," he added.

He said that todayآ's EU foreign ministers meeting will discuss two important things.

"We will agree formally the rollover of sanctions against Russia until it meets its Minsk obligations, so another 6 months of sanctions. We are going to talk about the commencement of our operation in the Mediterranean sea. Setting out a range of measures which will allow us to interrupt the smugglers' business ."

"We are going to announce today the commencement of the operation and of course we need United Nations security council resolutions to commence later phases of the operation. The early phases will begin immediately," he added.
