France more positive on EU solution to Greek financial crisis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French financial authorities appeared cautiously optimistic about the potential to find an agreement on a solution to the Greek financial crisis when European Union leaders meet for an emergency summit Monday evening in Brussels.

Greece could be in financial default by the end of June if no refinancing and reform package is agreed with the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the major creditors Athens has to settle with.

French Finance Minister Michel Sapin said in a radio interview that "quality work" had been done ahead of Monday's EU summit and that he recognised this work and the steps towards a solution. But he maintained that both sides have to evolve in the often bitter talks.

Sapin also warned on "RFI" radio here that the solution must not just be "global", as called for by Greek authorities, but "it must be lasting." He remarked that Greece has had no growth for the past five years because of the need to "correct past errors" but he also said that "we must respect the Greek people," a matter that Athens says has not always been a priority in the difficult, financial talks.

Greece must get back to "stability, serenity, a return to economic activity and employment," Sapin said.
