Afghan parliament attack leaves 20 people wounded

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) At least 20 people were injured on Monday as the suicide and gun attack on the Afghan parliament in capital city Kabul ended with all seven attackers dead, said officials.

Deputy interior ministry spokesman, Najib Danish in a statement said, "The attack has ended now. Seven attackers were involved. One detonated a car near the parliament building and security forces killed six after they entered a nearby building."

Spokesman for Kabul police, Ebadullah Karimi said, "A suicide bomber blew himself up just outside the parliament building and several fighters took positions in a building close to parliament." He confirmed that all lawmakers remained safe in the attack. Afghan lawmaker Shukria Barekzai who was present in the parliament at the time of attack said, "It was a huge blast that shook the building and shattered windows." According to media reports, seven explosions were heard in and around the parliament building.

Taliban rebels have claimed responsibility for the attack that ended after two hours. It occurred at a time when the Afghan president's nominee for the crucial post of defense minister was to be introduced in parliament.

A general session of Wolesi Jirga was underway when rebels attacked the house, forcing the lawmakers to flee the parliament building.

The deadly attack followed the annual warm weather offensive launched in April by Taliban rebels after NATO/ISAF forces left Afghanistan at the end of last year. (end)
