Egypt closes Rafah border crossing with Gaza

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egyptian authorities on Saturday closed the Rafah border crossing with Gaza after it was "exceptionally" opened for a week in both directions.

Up to 5,184 people crossed over the week, 4,044 entered Egypt from Gaza and other 1,140 left for the Strip, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted official sources as saying.

In addition, 194 trucks carrying building materials were allowed into Gaza, together with 300 kilograms of medications from France.

The border was opened last Saturday, initially three days to allow Palestinians to travel in and out of Gaza, then it was extended to Wednesday.

Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi ordered the crossing to remain open in both directions for a further two days on the occasion of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan, which started Thursday.
