UK Britons stage mass protests against austerity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Tens of thousands of Britons took to streets across Britain on Saturday in protest against the austerity measures planned by the Conservative government of Prime Minister David Cameron.

The largest mass rally was staged in front of the Bank of England in central London where nearly 75,000 protesters carried placards denouncing the economic policy of the government.

Union leaders, politicians and Labor MPs as well as celebs took part in the gathering before marching to the House of Parliament and 10 Downing Street.

Organizers of the protests say the austerity measures will result in loss of thousands jobs in the public sector and put in peril the future of the National Health Service (NHS) which provides free healthcare for citizens and foreign residents.

Meanwhile, the government claims that the measures are necessary given the current budget deficit of 89 billion Sterling pounds and the state debts of GBP 1.5 billion.

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne is to announce the austerity measures on July 8 meant to save nearly GBP 42 billion. (end)
