UN officials hail Turkey's role in hosting Syrian refugees


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said Saturday that Turkey is a role model for the world in dealing with Syrian refugees contrary to the countries that shutdown their borders in face of the traumatized refugees.

After visiting refugee camp in Midyat city, and in a joint press conference with Hollywood star and UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)'s Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, Guterres called on all countries to open their borders for refugees in need of protection.

Guterres added that the world has failed twice with regard to refugees, once during attempt to end crisis, and second when they did not provide an appropriate replacement to those who forcefully left their homes.

He stated that the UN Security Council did not play an active role in finding a solution to such problem, adding that shortage of global aid to refugees.

For her part, Jolie called on UN Security Council members to send their ministers and ambassadors to Syria to get first-hand information about dire situation there.

Jolie also thanked Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq for their warm hospitality and treatment of refugees. (end)
