Blast in S. Afghanistan claims 14 lives

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) At least 14 civilians were killed and five others wounded as their vehicle struck a landmine in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, said officials on Sunday.

The governor's spokesman, Umar Zwak, told media that the incident took place in Tarkha Nawar locality of Marjah district killing at least 14 people including women and children.

He further said that the passenger vehicle was heading to Marjah district from Lashkargah, the provincial capital. Helmand deputy provincial governor, Mohammad Jan Rasolyar in a statement to media confirmed that all fourteen civilians killed in the blast belonged to the same family.

The blast came at a time when Afghan security forces are facing the annual warm weather offensive by Taliban rebels alone following the withdrawal of NATO/ISAF forces from Afghanistan at the end of last year. (end) sbk.tg
