(MENAFN- QNA) Police have arrested 13 people who attacked a police station and officials in central China's Hunan Province in a protest stemming from a family feud over the death of a 28-year-old woman.
According to China's Xinhua news service, Cao Hui, a resident of Yanhe Village in Shuangfeng County, died on June 8. A report by the Ministry of Public Security showed she died from pesticide poisoning, but her family and relatives alleged her husband played a role in her death, according to a statement from Shuangfeng police.
Cao's blood relatives put her corpse in her mother-in-law's home in Yanhe, beat her husband, smashed up his furniture and hung banners to attract attention, the statement said.
On June 18, local officials and police officers attempting to defuse the situation were illegally held by the family. They were hit with bricks and beer bottles and forced to kneel before the deceased.
The violence escalated the next day, when hundreds of villagers - apparently protesting the authorities' handling of Cao's death and the subsequent dispute - swarmed Yanhe's police station and police vehicles, and blocked roads.
