Kosovo PM: New War Court Vote Next Week

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Mustafa announced on Friday that the government has "formally" submitted the draft law for the controversial special court to MPs and that he expects that parliament will discuss the proposed legislation and vote on it on June 26.

"We are trying to coordinate that it will be dealt with on Friday the 26th of this month in parliament, but parliament will set the date, I can't say this is definite," Mustafa told media.

The proposed new court has faced strong opposition from Kosovo Liberation Army veterans and some lawmakers who say it will tarnish the struggle against Serbian rule during the 1998-99 conflict.

Hundreds of KLA veterans staged a protest against the special court on Wednesday in Pristina, saying that its establishment would be an insult.

A European Union Special Investigative Task Force report said last year that unnamed former KLA fighters could face prosecution at the new court for conducting "a campaign of persecution" against Serbs, Roma and Kosovo Albanians believed to be collaborators with the Serbian regime.

The expected parliamentary vote on the legislation has been delayed amid speculation that the government could not secure a majority.

In an interview for BIRN Kosovo's 'Life in Kosovo' television programme on Thursday evening, the Dutch ambassador to Pristina, Robert Bosch, insisted that the creation of the special court was important to clear up the allegations against the KLA.

"That's why this court is very important because it will, let's say, save the face and show indeed that they were defending the country and going for the rights of Albanians that were put in jeopardy during [Serbian leader Slobodan] Milosevic rule," Bosch said.
