Qatar- Ramadan 'actually helps couples improve ties'

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Contrary to general belief that fasting Muslim married couples fight more during Ramadan, a major study shows the holy month actually helps couples improve relationship.

A counsellor at Family Counselling Centre says a study among 1,000 fasting couples by Cairo's Al Azhar University shows that instead of fighting, Ramadan helps husbands and wives show patience to each other and improve relationship.

Mahmoud Abul Aala (pictured)said it is not true that due to fasting some husbands become irritated, lose temper, fight with wives and scold them on trivial issues.

Aala was replying to Al Sharq when told that some husbands blame their wives for wasting money during the holy month and splurging cash on unproductive things and they get angry. Such fights are reduced in frequency and intensity during Ramadan. "If, for example, a couple fights seven times in a normal month on average, during Ramadan such quarrels would be two," he said.

He said many people think they cannot divorce their wives during Ramadan because it is haram (forbidden) and even if they have decided to part ways, they sit over the decision and divorce after the holy month is over. He said people's behaviour might change a bit during Ramadan and there can be some irritation due to the fact that the time of eating and sleeping changes.

Couples should try to cope with the changed situation during Ramadan and be patient in dealing with each other, he said.
