(MENAFN- The Peninsula) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has received a written message from Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, calling for setting up a separate item to fight corruption and establish the rule of law as a goal within the proposed New Millennium Goals on the agenda of the UN summit to adopt a post-2015 development plan.
The Emir called for the fight against corruption to be an independent goal as part of the summit's goals to highlight actions taken to tackle the issue and application of UN mechanisms for the purpose.
This reflects the Emir's keenness to support the fight against corruption, support the rule of law and promote transparency at various levels to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals, including Millennium Development Goals.
The message was handed over by Attorney General Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, also UN Special Advocate for fight against corruption, during a meeting with Ban in New York yesterday.
Since 2005, Qatar has been leading global efforts to promote the rule of law and fight corruption.
It hosted World Summit of Attorneys General and organised the Third Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the fight against corruption. The summit adopted Doha mechanism which stipulates that states should review each other in implementation of the convention.
After the Doha conference, Ban said the UN Convention Against Corruption was no longer as it had been, as countries have become obliged to abide by the convention and Doha review mechanism.
In collaboration with the UN, Qatar has established the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre at regional and international levels. A similar centre was set up in Dakar, Senegal, to support efforts of African countries in the area.
