Qatar Stresses Education for All on an Equal Basis

(MENAFN- QNA) The State of Qatar stressed the need to provide education for all on an equal basis regardless of the families and individuals' financial capabilities, noting that the right to education is a fundamental right guaranteed by international and regional conventions on human rights and promoted by national laws.

This came in a statement delivered by Qatar's delegation delivered on Friday by the Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to Geneva, Noor Al Sada, during the "Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the right to education" in item (3) within the framework of the 29th session of the Human Rights Council.

Al Sada said we do not deny the role and contribution of the private sector to enrich the educational process and spread education, but we stress at the same time that the commercialization and marketing of education as a commercial commodity targeting profits violates many principles of human rights, and would deny low-income students of their right to enjoy education services, and increase the opportunities of their marginalization and exclusion in the community, asserting that education should not be the preserve of the rich but shall be an inalienable right for everyone.

She pointed out that the Qatari Constitution guarantees the right to education provided that education is a key pillar of the progress of society guaranteed and sponsored by the State. Qatar National Vision 2030 considers Human Development as its first pillar, in which the education represents a major focus to provide individuals with the knowledge and necessary skills to contribute to the construction and progress of society.

Al Sada referred in this regard to the Education and Training Sector Strategy 2011–2016, which emphasis the right of all citizens to access to educational and training opportunities.

Concluding her speech, Al Sada urged the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education Rapporteur to provide further clarification on how to make investment in the private education responsive to its objectives and compatible with international human rights standards for education.
