US- Nine people killed in S. Carolina church attack


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) At least nine people were killed last night when a white gunman opened fire inside a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, the city's police chief Greg Mullen said on Thursday, describing the attack as a "hate crime".

Mullen told a press conference that the 21-year-old gunman entered the church of black people at midnight and opened fired at worshippers, killing six women and three men.

Among the victims was Reverend Clementa Pinckney, who was the church's pastor and a Democratic member of the state Senate, he added.

The US Department of Justice said it would open a hate crime investigation into the shooting. (end) yt.hm
