Senate passes USD 612 bln defense policy bill

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Despite a veto threat from President Barack Obama, the US Senate passed a USD 612 billion defense policy bill on Thursday that will provide extra war funding to the Pentagon, arm Ukrainian forces, and make it harder for Obama to close Guantanamo Bay.

The vote was 71 to 25 thanks to Republican support of the legislation. For the bill to become law, it must conform with the language passed in the House, and then signed by Obama.

The White House has long been opposed to the bill due to provisions that will allow the Pentagon to spend beyond its cap due to a USD 38 billion special war fund, fund bases that the administration wants to close, and make it harder to close Guantanamo Bay detention centers.
