Greek debt talks end with no deal: EU

(MENAFN- AFP) Crunch talks to resolve a five-month standoff between Greece and its EU-IMF creditors ended Thursday without a deal, Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commission vice-president for the euro, said on Thursday.

"No deal at Eurogroup," Dombrovskis said in a tweet after the talks broke up after 90 minutes of discussion on Greece.

"Strong signal for Greece to engage seriously in negotiations. The Eurogroup stands ready to reconvene at any moment," he added.

A European source said the meeting was "tragic... without even a request to extend the programme by the end of the month," when Greece's second bailout expires.

The source added that the outspoken Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis also raised the issue of restructuring the country's huge debt during the meeting, a red line for Greece's European partners.

Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem told a press conference that time was running out and said the "ball is clearly in the Greek court".

The Dutch finance minister said it was "regrettable to say that too little progress has been made and no agreement yet is in sight."

He added: "There is a strong signal that it is up to them to submit new proposals in coming days."
