Saudi- Houthi problem
(MENAFN- Arab News) This is with reference to the report 'Houthis 'use truce to regroup'' (June 17). The Houthi rebels are obviously not interested in peace or cease-fire. Had they genuinely desired peace and stability in Yemen they would have not acted irresponsibly as is evident from their track record.
The Gulf countries particularly Saudi Arabia made all efforts to resolve the Yemen crisis amicably but the Houthis acted as if nobody could stop their aggression. Perhaps it was the Iranian support that had emboldened this ragtag group of illiterate people. Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh had also played a dirty role in the deterioration of the country's situation. His hunger for power and money appears to be insatiable. Despite ruling Yemen for around three decades this treacherous man was dreaming to return to power after being overthrown by his own people. This thankless man conveniently forgot the brotherly Saudi gesture following his ouster. Instead of reciprocating in a similar manner he tried to conspire against Saudi Arabia. Saleh his family members and close aides should be completely barred from any future role in Yemeni politics.
As for the Houthis once all the Iranian-supplied arms and ammunitions are exhausted they will come to terms with life. What is important now is to ensure that these rebels don't receive any assistance from any source. Secondly a conference of all tribal leaders of the country should be convened to form a coalition force to counter these Houthis. One thing is for sure that these rebels are not large in numbers and cannot sustain on various fronts at a time. The Zaidi community and its leaders should also be mobilized against this militia. In my opinion this is the best possible option to end the Yemeni crisis at the earliest. Of course it is easier said than done. Yawar Siddiqui Jeddah
