(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) About 1,000 Syrians, who fled fighting in Syria, have crossed back into their country on Wednesday, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter onsite.
They had come from the city of Tel Abyad, which was seized by armed Kurdish groups, following airstrikes launched by the U.S.-led coalition.
They crossed through the Akcakale border gate in the southern province of Sanliurfa after being granted permission by Turkish authorities.
An Anadoly Agency reporter in the region said there were a few Syrians on the other side of the border waiting to enter Turkey.
Turkey, which shares a 900-kilometer long border with Syria, has given refuge to more than 1.7 million Syrians, according to the UN's refugee agency, with more people coming in because of ongoing bloodshed in the war-torn country.
Over the past two weeks, over 20,000 Syrian refugees fleeing clashes in the Syrian town of Tel Abyad entered Turkey's Sanliurfa province through the Akcakale border crossing.
