Iran reaffirms support to Iraq against Daesh
(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Iran will continue to support Iraq in its fight against the extremist group Daesh, Iran's president Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday.
"Iraq's security and stability is no doubt intertwined with that of Iran," Rouhani said in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi in the Iranian capital of Tehran, according to a press statement issued by Rouhani's office.
"Strengthening and developing the relations between Iran and Iraq would not only benefit the two countries, but all other countries in the region," Rouhani said, adding that security and peace in Iraq and Iran's other neighbors could help progress and development in the region.
"Unfortunately, some countries want to divide the Iraqi people for their short-term interests. All efforts must be made to strengthen Iraq's national unity in such an environment," he said.
"We are ready to continue to cooperate with the Iraqi government in its fight against terror," he added.
Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi hailed Iran's friendly support to Iraq in its fight against the Daesh, and said the Islamic Republic's continued help would help eradicate the extremist group not just in Iraq, but in the whole region.
"Daesh is trying to destroy our cultural heritage and religion. However, the Iraqi people and government stand united against the terrorists and expect their friends' support in this fight," he added.
Iraq has plunged into a security vacuum since June 2014, when Daesh stormed the northern province of Mosul and declared what it called a caliphate in Iraq and Syria.
Daesh massacres and the forced deportation of minority populations led to the creation of an international coalition against the terror group. The U.S.-led coalition has been staging airstrikes against Daesh objectives in Iraq and Syria since mid-September 2014.
