QSL season to start in September


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The 2015-16 season of country's most prestigious football league, the Qatar Stars League (QSL) promising more excitement will get under way in September, it was announced yesterday.

According to details, the QSL sent an official circular to the 14 QSL member clubs announcing that the domestic competition for the new season will begin from September 11, 2015.

The schedule of matches is expected to be announced soon.

Lekhwiya, under the supervision of Danish coach Michael Laudrup won the last QSL title to make it four out of last five seasons.

They crushed Al Ahli 3-1 to seal the title with a round to spare.

Hussain Amute's Al Sadd who failed to capitalise on a perfect start finished second while El Jaish ended the last QSL season on third spot.

The 2014-15 season was dubbed as the best QSL edition, witnessing more fans' turnaround and thrilling battles among the 14 competing teams.

"We witnessed this season a gradual increase in the number of spectators attending the league matches," the QSL CEO Hani Ballan had said after the sucessful last season. Ballan hoped that the QSL would become the top league in Arab world if spectators come in good numbers.

"It is up to the spectators, when the number of fans increases, it would make the Qatar Stars League without a doubt the best Asian and Arab League.," he had said.

The return of football giants Al Rayyan is also been seen as a good omen for the forthcoming edition of the league.

"There is no doubt that the return of Al Rayyan Sports Club would be an added asset to the league fixtures next season," Ballan said.

Rookies Mesaimeer Football Club after being promoted to the QSL, following the Qatargas league triumph have shown the potential to pull off surprises against top teams.

Meanwhile, Al Sailiya Sports Club's Head of Football Hadi Al Marri said that defender Grigore, who just arrived from French Club Toulouse for one season, will be a huge asset to the team.

"Both the technical staff and AL Sailiya officials have observed him in the past few months with his national team and with Toulouse FC He is a key player in the Romanian National Team. Just three days ago he represented his country," he said.

Grigore signed his contract with the Doha based side on Tuesday in the presence of the Club President Abdullah Al Aidah.

The defender will now leave Qatar once again as he heads back to his homeland. He will then return to Doha on the 5th of July to take part in preseason training. The club is seeking to sign two more foreign players to fulfil the QFA rule of 3 plus 1.
