(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) yesterday reiterated its support to Qatar's hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022, calling on all institutions of the Joint Islamic Action and to media institutions in its member states to stress Qatar's right to organise the international tournament.

In a statement, the OIC General Secretariat emphasised that organising the 2022 World Cup in Qatar represented an achievement for its member states.

It welcomed Qatar's continued preparations to host the 2022 World Cup, applauding the level of progress reached so far.

The General Secretariat also stressed the role played by sports "in consolidating peace, solidarity, mutuality and social and economic development, as well to the worldwide popularity of the football game as a building block in rapprochement of people, boosting development and peace and building interfaith and intercultural bridges".
